Loft conversion types:

Dormer Loft Conversion

A Dormer Loft Conversion is created by extending the existing roof, the roof extension projects vertically from the sloping roof. This type of conversion is the most common, and can add floor and headroom space within the building. It can be built with either a flat or double pitched roof, with many different types of eternal finishing, such as render, hung tiles, UPVC cladding or wooden shiplap.

A dormer conversion usually doesn’t always need planning permission, but will need building control consent. Please check with your local authority to see if planning is required in your area.

Mansard Loft Conversion

Named after the French Architect; Francois Mansart, a Mansard Loft Conversion is usually to the rear of the property and changes the slope of one side to a pitch of 72 degrees. The front wall of the mansard slopes inwards and the conversion usually has small dormer windows. This type of conversion will require planning permission, and can be more costly, but will result in extensive floor space and head room in the loft area.

Velux Loft Conversion

A Velux Loft Conversion or roof light conversions are the normally the most cost effective, and are ideal for those living in areas with tight planning restrictions as it allows the loft to be converted without changing the roofline. To create a usable space, this type of conversion is only really suitable if the loft space has adequate headroom clearance. Beams etc can be moved within the space if necessary to create this.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

A Hip to Gable Loft Conversion extends the ridge line out towards the gable end of the house creating a much larger roof area. This type of conversion will require planning permission as it will change the roof layout. As with Dormer Conversion, the exeternal walls of the hip to gable conversion can be dressed in many different ways such as render, hung tiles, UPVC cladding or wooden shiplap.
